Il s'agit, avec Black Sabbath, de l'un des tout premiers groupes du genre, et encore aujourd'hui un des plus influents. Le premier album, Rocka Rolla, comporte des bases hard rock et de fortes réminiscences du rock progressif avec des morceaux longs et planants. Mais à partir de Sad wings of destiny, le style se durcit considérablement, définissant alors les caractéristiques principales du heavy metal. Le succès de Judas Priest sera dès lors grandissant dans le monde entier.
